Osoyoos & Area
Osoyoos is located on Osoyoos Lake 60 km South of Penticton. The town, which sits in the narrows of the lake, got its name from the indian word 'sooyes' which means where lakes meet. The BC gold rush helped to open the area for settlement and a customs house was established there in 1865.
Osoyoos sits at the crossroads of two of BC's main highways, Hwy. 97 and Hwy. 3. only 5 minutes from the Canada/U.S. Border. Hwy. 97 runs north to Alaska and South to Mexico. Hwy 3 runs west to Vancouver and east to the Crowsnest Pass through the Rocky Mountains. If you take a drive along Hwy. 3 East, you can reach the Anarchist Mountain Viewpoint, where you can get a breathtaking view of Osoyoos.
Osoyoos is home to Canada's only "Arid Desert" with the lowest rainfall, the highest temperatures and the warmest lakes. Visit the Osoyoos Desert Centre to learn more about the Sonora Desert, which spans down through Oregon and Arizona as far south as Mexico. Keep your eyes open for endangered burrowing owls, tiger salamanders, and badgers.
The desert is surrounded by lush fruit trees and towering mountains. It's a wonderful recreational destination with miles of shallow, sandy beaches (there are four public beaches). The lake is quite deep in the centre and home to five varieties of fish - a delight for fishermen.
Osoyoos produces the earliest fruit crops in Canada. The fruit trees bloom in April, with the first crop of cherries in late June, followed by apricots, peaches, pears, apples and finally grapes in late September.
The Town's population is 4,000 with approximately 2,200 in the surrounding area.
